A Revolution in Fishing Glass Technology : 1898

Off the coast of Southern California lies Catalina Island, the birthplace of modern sport fishing. In 1898, a group of anglers developed new standards for sport fishing that gave the fish a true fighting chance. Records were made and broken, and these high standards remain in place today. Inspired by the men and women who not only chase these trophy fish, but also set out to protect them and their habitat.

We were approached by a few highly accomplished anglers looking to improve the current offering of sport fishing glasses. They gave us a list of improvements they would like to see and at the heart of it was developing a lens like no other on the market. With the list in hand we began the journey to create a sport fishing glass.

Starting with the lens, we developed a mineral glass lens that had all the high quality ingredients of our inline lenses (100% Polarized, AR, Hydrophobic, Oleophobic coatings) and experimented with different values in order to get to one that really enhanced the performance on the water.

For the frame we used Japanese aerospace grade titanium for its strength to weight ratio. The frame also received custom features like removable anti-slip temple tips. This allowed you to use a tether of your choosing. To add more durability and provide sun protection we used a thermal injected hood. This would cut down on glare and wind. Then we added an adjustable nose pad so you could fine tune fit or increase space to cut down on fogging while wearing a sun mask or deep sun hood.

The result is a unique, feature rich sunglass that performs exceptionally well on the water. Whether you are working from a boat chasing tuna or hiking along the river stalking trophy trout, the 1898 sunglass is ready for your adventures. To check out the 1898, click this link to learn more.
